Mpetshi Perricard rides a sizzling serve to upset Shelton and win Swiss Indoors.

The French player, currently sitting at No. 50, beat sixth-seed Shelton in the finals with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6 (4) allowing him to become the lowest-ranked champion since the tournament became a tour-level event in 1975.

All week at Basel, Mpetshi Perricard was in great form. His service didn’t get broken even once making his service points tally to 60 and faced three break points only in his quarter-final match with Denis Shapovalov.

He also recorded 22 aces in his match against Shelton after which he claimed his first ever ATP 500 title.

Mpetshi Perricard commenced the season while sitting at the 200 mark in the ATP rankings among the other players, won a few challenger titles then also managed to win his first title at the ATP level in Lyon in May.

On Monday, the 21-year-old will move up to rank 31 in the world going to be his career high.

This week’s performance has ensured that Shelton will be able to return to the top 20 having been 23rd.
