The Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated this season, improving their 7–8 standing to 8 -0. Their last win came on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were always projected to beat them. This match posed some difficulties for the Chiefs and, in particular, their quarterback. The game against the Buccaneers on “Monday Night Football” presented the strongest challenges for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Under Mahomes’ leadership, the Chiefs fell behind by seven points in the fourth quarter of the match. Nonetheless, thanks to the efforts of Mahomes, who dislocated his ankle in the process of scoring the first touchdown. The Kansas City Chiefs came back to score two touchdown passes.
After the Kansas City Chiefs made a trade to acquire the wide receiver from the Tennessee Titans, DeAndre Hopkins had a significant impact on the team. In his second game with the Kansas City team, Hopkins managed to haul in eight passes for 86 yards and had two touchdowns.
Here are the things Both Teams needed to know about from Monday night:
Kansas City Chiefs (8-0)
QB breakdown:
Mahomes, however, was not completely out of the game as he completed a pass to Hopkins for 35 yards earning his first passing completion of 20 or more air yards since week 4. That was the only instance in the game where Mahomes managed to throw a pass of over 20 yards. Moreover, he was sacked four times as well.
Most surprising performance:
In the first half, Kareem Hunt rushed 7 times for 16 yards and endured his share of difficulties. However, during Kansas City’s 17-17 come-from-behind drive in the second half. He was allocated a whopping 47 yards and ran the ball 7 times. Overall, he ended the game with a total of 27 rushing attempts and 106 rushing yards, one of which was a game-winning touchdown.
Describe the game in two words:
Hard-fought victory. The Kansas City Chiefs were behind seven points in the fourth quarter and their lackluster offense seemed to be heading for yet another defeat. However, with Mahomes still nursing an ankle injury, they somehow managed to convert two touchdown drives and win the game in overtime with a score of 24-17– Adam Teicher
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5)
The Bucs came close to defeating the only NFL team with no losses but have now suffered three defeats in a row. The team’s top three wide receivers, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan did not feature in the game. With the score tied at 24-24, Mayfield threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Miller who was the team’s wide receiver. Their defense faltered, however, giving up a 10-play drive in OT that concluded with a 2-yard scoring run by Hunt.
The Bucs went below .500 for the first time in the season. They have one more game next week hosting the San Francisco 49ers before their week 11 bye and from there, Evans will be expected back. From there, they would have a light schedule with only the Los Angeles Chargers boasting a winning record which suggests that they could make another late-season push for playoffs.
QB breakdown:
Mayfield completed 23 of 31 passing attempts for a total of 200 yards and was successful in making two touchdown passes. One of his touchdowns came in the second quarter when Cade Otton, a tight end, made a spectacular catch in the end zone while surrounded by safety Justin Reid who provided coverage. As he did a week ago, Otton caught many of Mayfield’s passes, and he also aided Bucky Irving and Rachaad White in their screen attempts.
Biggest hole in the game plan:
All four touchdowns by the Kansas City Chiefs were scored on the third down, two of which saw Hopkins line up against Josh Hayes who had his debut NFL start seeing Tyrek Funderburk’s poor performance last week. This was a difficult task, but the Bucs had no choice as Jamel Dean was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Nonetheless, Hayes was able to recover a fumble by Tykee Smith from Travis Kelce.
Eye-popping stat:
Despite two sacks secured by Vea and Kancey, the defensive tackles of the Bucs did not put any real effort into trying to pressure Mahomes – such as what they did in SB LV. Over the first 3 quarters of the game, the percentage of blitzes called on Mahomes’ dropbacks was only 13%. Which is the second lowest while Bowles has been coaching the Bucs. The 11% of blitzing in SB LV by Bowles is the least while he was in charge of the defense calls– Jenna Laine
