Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Suffers Ankle Injury in Win Against Browns

During Sunday’s victory against the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained an injury in the right ankle which has raised concerns regarding his fitness in the next game against the Houston Texans.

At the conclusion of the match, Patrick Mahomes made remarks in respect to the injury stating that the full extent of the injury would not be known until later.

“It’s hard to say right now,” Patrick Mahomes said. “Adrenaline is still rolling, and usually the day after is when you get a better sense of it. In my opinion, I could have seen the match through under normal conditions but we were clever enough to allow Carson [Wentz] to take over.”

He added, “Right now it’s all about concentrating on rehab and treatment to prepare for a short week and a tough game.”

Patrick Mahomes Exits in Fourth Quarter

The injury transpired midway through the fourth quarter as Patrick Mahomes was throwing a fourth-down pass that did not connect with any of his teammates. As it stood at that moment, the Chiefs were ahead leading 21-7, and Wentz who was the backup quarterback came into the game to finish it off.

Patrick Mahomes Nu’Karma however remained on the sidelines until the end of the match but it was clear that he was injured as he attempted to walk to the changing room.

The injury did not look like a fracture, was what Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said.

Reid stated it was sore, but they would start the rehab process, and if further consultation was needed, they could assess him as the week went on.

Andy Reid also believes Patrick Mahomes could have played on but felt it was unnecessary exposing him to further injury “I wanted him to battle through it, but it is a good thing that we have someone like Carson on the team. So it worked out well for everyone as I was able to give him some game time and the players had a chance to hear his snap count in case he had to come on again.”

Details of the Play

Patrick Mahomes described the hit that caused the injury:

Mahomes elaborated, “I aimed at going forward inside the pocket on the fourth occasion to make something work. But while throwing the pass, I felt a hit as though someone pushed me from behind, and then I slipped on my ankle. But that happens in football anyway. I attempted to stand up again but it was painful. What remains now is to look forward to the recovery to be fit for the next week.”

Dalvin Tomlinson and Mike Hall, two defenders, teamed up to tackle Patrick Mahomes by bringing him down from behind while hitting him high.

But Patrick Mahomes did mention he was willing to get back into the game but had faith in Wentz to take care of the concluding minutes.

“Carson did a wonderful job controlling the time, but I had faith in him and trusted him,” Patrick Mahomes said. “Carson made it extensibly easy for me as well with his superb ball protection and clock control.”

Offensive Struggles Under Pressure

Patrick Mahomes completed 19 of 38 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns before his exit from the game. However, according to ESPN, he was under consistent threat from Cleveland’s defense, as he was able to throw a pass only after being struck on several occasions and while experiencing pressure twenty-one times.

“All you have to do is depend on the offense,” was what Patrick Mahomes said. “The concern though is whether I am going to do a good job of deciphering all the options available in terms of plays, passing the ball in quick succession, and then trying to see what the opposition allows us to do. Of course, my first instinct is to always look for the worker but sometimes the best option is just to take the short completions and keep everything moving.”

Reid Defends Playcalling

In the second half, the Chiefs’ offense seemed to be unable to find any continuity because there were two back-to-back three-and-outs before Patrick Mahomes went down. Reid explained the need for balance in the team’s playcalling.

“You have got to be able to throw the ball in this league”, Reid said. “The ball didn’t come off well in some of our runs either, so we’ve got to clean that up as well. I have to give him [Patrick Mahomes] better choices and do a better job of getting him in a position to be successful.”
